What is a VO2 Max Test?

The VO2 Machine is designed to calculate maximal oxygen consumption and is widely used as an index of aerobic ability or fitness - this is also known as your VO2 Max. These machines are used in numerous national and international sporting organisations to assess the elite athletes for performance. It is well referenced that well-trained and elite athletes are characterised by a high capacity to consume oxygen. VO2 max can also be inferred through means of submaximal testing, but due to the nature of high-performance athletes, more accurate results are sought through maximal testing.

Why VO2 Max Testing?

Testing can provide valuable information for coaches and athletes, and practitioners allowing a more specific training program tailored to improving your optimal performance outcomes. Understanding your physiology in detail allows for a more accurate determination and implementation of training levels, competition, and recovery time. Everyone is unique and has their own training threshold, these training thresholds or zones can change over time. Changes can happen due to a plethora of reasons such as injury, exercise history and even illness. By testing at different times of the year you’ll be able to monitor your physiology adaptations and training thresholds, making it easier to adapt modify your training to your specific needs as your body changes. The frequency of testing will vary depending on your sport, goals, and training periodisation. For maximum efficiency and performance outcomes, it is recommended that you should get baseline measurements and testing done before you begin a new program.

Who is the VO2 Max Test For?

The VO2 Max test is often taken by endurance-based athletes, and people training for fitness events, but those aren’t the only ones that will benefit from the test. It is also excellent for anyone who is interested in improving their fitness level and sport performance.

How to Measure VO2 Max

VO2 max tests are usually performed in a controlled lab and takes between 20 to 40 minutes. In most cases, either a treadmill or stationary bicycle will be used. Before the VO2 Max test, you will be fitted with a face mask that is connected to a machine. This machine allows us to analyse the concentration of oxygen and carbon dioxide that is exhaled along with your respiratory rate. We will also monitor your heart rate.
