The Hunter Academy of Sport softball talent development program operates as a development pathway for young Hunter Region softballers aspiring towards state selection. It offers advanced skill development and is conducted in collaboration with both the Newcastle & District Softball Association and Softball NSW. Participants are also provided with information in sports education in areas such as, sport psychology, nutrition, injury management, strength and conditioning and motivation.

Boys and girls who are born in 2000, 2001, 2002 & 2003 and who reside or attend school in the Hunter region are eligible for selection in this squad. If you reside outside of the Hunter region and your regional academy does not offer a softball program, you are eligible to apply for the HAS program.

The program begins with a 6 week high performance fitness program (1 session per week) and then moves into 2 x weekly training sessions (Sunday mornings and Monday evenings) from March through to July, then finishes with the AIYG competition. 100% commitment is expected from all athletes.  

Athlete Benefits

The following benefits will apply to those selected in the softball program:

  • weekly training sessions to further develop skills (Sunday & Monday sessions);
  • 6 week High Performance fitness training & strength & conditioning program;
  • access to a network of specialised coaches;
  • educational sessions in topics such as: physiotherapy, and sports psychology;
  • Australian Invitation Youth Games (AIYG) competition: to be held July 14-16 2017 (inter-academy competition run in conjunction with Softball NSW)

Athlete Uniform

Each athlete will be outfitted with a hoodie (or track top), Academy polo (white), navy T-shirt & cap. The uniform is to be worn at all squad sessions (training and educational) and is to be worn at competitions and events. If re-selected, returning athletes are not required to purchase new items.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for a position within the softball program, athletes must be:

  • males and females born in 2000, 2001, 2002 & 2003;
  • a resident within the *Hunter region;
  • attending school within the Hunter region;
  • a financial member of Softball NSW/registered with a softball association

* If you reside outside of the Hunter region and your regional academy does not offer a softball program, you are eligible to apply for the HAS program.

Cost

A program levy will be applicable to successful athletes and covers the full cost of participation in the program, and a uniform levy will also be applicable (inc. GST).
