HUNTER Academy of Sport's netball squad claimed a competition win and gained valuable experience in a two-day regional netball meet in Orange recently.

More than 20 netball players, five umpires and seven coaches from the Academy's netball program mixed with close to 300 of the most talented athletes from across the state at the annual Academy Challenge held in Orange at the end of September.

The event, run by Western Region Academy of Sport with the support of Netball NSW, brought together netballers, umpires and coaching staff from across 11 Regional Academies of Sport for a two-day competition focused on development and talent identification across all areas of play.

The first day of the challenge pitted the academies against each other in a round-robin styled tournament, with HAS taking out one of the divisions.

Day two had a heavy focus on development, with both players and coaches across all academies mixed in new team formations alongside their regional counterparts.

The HAS coaches were given the opportunity to be mentored by Netball NSW representatives, and umpires were put on show.

HAS umpires Grace Freeman and Sarah Muskart were awarded their National C Badge and Claire Webster her B at the tournament, a testament to the strength of the Academy program and its position in the athlete development pathway.

Nominations are now open for the 2019/20 Hunter Academy of Sport netball and netball umpire programs. For more information please visit www.hunteracademy.org.au
