The Hunter Academy of Sport held their annual Spring Orientation Day on Saturday, October 14th at The University of Newcastle. The Orientation involved over 200 athletes and their parents, coaches and some very special guest speakers.

The spring Orientation marked the start date of the following sports:

  • AFL
  • Basketball
  • Golf
  • Netball
  • Netball Umpires
  • Softball
  • Lawn Bowls

The Orientation began with an introduction to the Academy, presented by CEO Brett O’Farrell and Sports Programs Manager Sallie Partridge. Following, HAS were lucky enough to secure social media manager for the Central Coast Mariners Tyson Scott, and Trampoline Olympian and ex-HAS athlete Ty Swadling to talk with the collective about various topics. Tyson was able to open the eyes of the athletes with his extensive knowledge of the importance of being safe online and creating an online presence. Ty engaged the athletes with his presentation on being a warrior, persevering through hardship and staying motivated.

Tim Schneider, HAS physio, made a great presentation about sport science and recovery, followed by a panel discussion with in-house nutritionist Liam McCudden, Strength & Conditioning coach Anthony Webb and Psychologist Fiona McCarthy.

Overall, the Orientation was deemed a success with a great turn out, positive feedback and highly motivated and excited athletes. The Orientation allowed the athletes to see themselves as something bigger than just their sport, and interact with athletes from different sporting backgrounds.

We look forward to hearing about the progress these athletes make in the duration of their programs!
