The Hunter Academy of Sport achieved a ‘Summer of Success’ across all of their 19 sports.
Ranging from rugby 7s to ten pin bowling, the region’s young rising superstars excelled not just in the Hunter region, but nationwide, with results showcasing the pure talent of the athletes within the academy.
“Last year was a terrific year for the Hunter Academy, with 11 of our past athletes representing Australia in RIO, combining for one gold and three silver medals,” CEO Brett O’Farrell said.
“But to see such great results over summer across many different sports from our current crop of athletes is just as rewarding for the organisation.”
Academy athletes Emma Bradford (Rugby 7s), Nakita Jackson and Rhiannon Stokes (Netball) and Phoebe Date, Brad McKinnon and Jackson Botham (Ten Pin Bowling) were selected in NSW squads.
From January 16-21, 10 Hunter Academy basketball athletes travelled to Albury to represent NSW Country and compete in the Australian Junior Country Basketball Cup against visiting teams from Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand.
Academy Sailing athletes Brin Liddell took first place at the Sabot National Championships in Hobart, and Tom Dawson and Luke Sullivan won the Flying 11 state championships.
Academy golfer Reid Brown won the Harvey Norman Week of Golf at Newcastle Golf Club,
The Hunter Academy sent 12 athletes to represent Country NSW Blue Sox at the Australian National Baseball Championships in Blacktown from January 5-15.
Rixon Wingrove was named under-18s MVP for the tournament selected in the Australian squad.
Ex-Hunter Academy squad members Alexander and Lachlan Wells have been named in the Australian Baseball Squad to compete in the Baseball World Classics, which started this week in Japan.
“The achievements of all the Hunter Academy athletes is a credit to our coaches, regional sporting organisations and expert sports science consultants,” Mr O’Farrell said.
Attention now turns to the 2017 ClubsNSW Academy Games from April 7-9.
