Australia Hall of Fame Scholarship & Mentoring Program for 2017

14th June 2016

Australian Junior Athletes (U/21) are invited to apply for The Sport Australia Hall of Fame Scholarship & Mentoring Program for 2017

The Sport Australia Hall of Fame Scholarship and Mentoring Program, which commenced in 2006, was bred from the desire of our Member’s to leave a legacy greater than their sporting achievements alone.

Their value as role models, not only to those that want to follow in their athletic footsteps, but also to the broader community who can learn from their mindset, perseverance and commitment to achieve their own life’s goals is unique.

The Program is one of the most exceptional in this country, if not the world, as it personally connects the nation’s next wave of talent with these great Australian sporting role models, providing unrivalled access to and personal one-on-one mentoring from an Inducted Member; surely no greater way to inspire young sportspeople to fulfil their potential.

Each Scholarship will apply from January 1 to December 31, 2017.

The Sport Australia Hall of Fame Scholarship & Mentoring Program will consist of:

  • One-on-one personal mentoring by an Inducted Member of The Sport Australia Hall of Fame
  • A $5,000 sporting expenses grant
  • On stage presentation of the Scholarship at The Sport Australia Hall of Fame Induction & Awards Gala Dinner at the Palladium at Crown Melbourne on Thursday 13 October, 2016. (Travel cost for recipient covered).
  • One international return economy flight within the Etihad Airways network. (For sporting use only).
  • ‘The Sport Australia Hall of Fame Scholarship Holder’ logo for agreed use.

Since the introduction of the Program in 2006, over 70 young Australian athletes have benefited from the opportunity of a lifetime to draw on the experience and wisdom of The Sport Australia Hall of Fame Members in addition to the valuable cash grant and international airfare.

Scholarship holders have been privileged to be mentored by such Australian sporting greats as; Catherine Freeman OAM, Susie O’Neill OAM, Rechelle Hawkes OAM, Adam Gilchrist AM, Robert de Castella AO MBE, Bruce McAvaney OAM, Nick Farr-Jones AM, Andrew Gaze AM, Liz Ellis AM, Mick Doohan AM and SAHOF Chairman, John Bertrand AM.

The success of this Program is outstanding with 17 past/present Scholarship recipients representing Australia at the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games. In 2014, 12 of our recipients were selected to represent Australia at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. With the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic games on the horizon, five past and present scholarship holders have had their selection confirmed, with another 17 still in contention.

Chairman John Bertrand AM who was Mentor to 2013 Scholarship Holder and Olympic Silver Medallist Olivia Price said “the Mentoring is a money can't buy opportunity. The impact of the Mentoring on our Scholarship Holders has been profound".

Tayla Hanak, 2016 Scholarship and Mentoring Program recipient, who is currently being Mentored by Layne Beachley, cannot believe how the experience helped her; "I am so honoured to be a Sport Australia Hall of Fame Scholarship holder and so appreciative of the opportunities it has and continues to provide. The opportunity to be mentored by the most successful female surfer in Australian history, Layne Beachley has been incredible".
